Rains

Rains develops and manufactures modern and comfortable rainwear. Signature to this promise, is a lightweight yet strong polyester fabric backed with a flexible polyurethane coating. The fabric is bonded together through ultrasonic welding, ensuring quality, waterproof products. Additionally, all fittings, zippers and trimmings are designed and produced in materials optimized for wet conditions.

Name

The name Rains celebrates the basic element to which Rains products are designed to protect the wearer from: rain. A word that has historically been a bearer of both joy and discomfort, Rains offers the opportunity to reclaim the word and view inclement weather as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience. Each product in return becomes a celebration of precipitation and the opportunity that lies within a rainy day.

History

Since 2012, Rains has set out to rethink quality rainwear. Based on an initiative to reinterpret the traditional rubber raincoat in a novel way, Rains launched with just one product: a poncho.

The season after, Rains launched with a full collection of waterproof apparel, bags, and accessories. Today, each collection continues in the same spirit; providing a mix between revitalized designs from rainwear archives and original rainwear solutions found exclusively at Rains.

Product

Each Rains product is initiated to honor and challenge traditional perceptions of rainwear. In conjunction to providing quality waterproof products, Rains apparel, bags, and accessories are designed to mix function with fashion. Headquartered in Denmark, a Scandinavian undertone of simplicity remains constant in the Rains aesthetic, yet each product is carefully considered for the global customer.

Quality Control

All components of Rains products stand confidently under the standards of REACH; the European legislation regulating registrations, evaluations, authorizations and restrictions of chemicals. Together, with international testing centers, Rains continually tests the components of products in order to ensure the highest standards of quality control. All individual product specifications can be found in the product descriptions and details section of the product pages.

CSR Policy

Our commitment is based on a holistic approach integrating both social, environmental and economic concerns into the core of our business. We refer to the international agreed upon minimum standard for responsible business behavior including respecting labor- and human rights, protecting the environment and countering corruption.

Light the Way

Rains actively takes on a wider responsibility beyond legislation to create a positive change to sustainable development. We cannot save the world alone, but we are confident that our efforts can contribute. In our responsibility report, Light the Way, we are mapping our sustainable journey and shedding a light on our responsible business activities and objectives.

Materials and Innovation

Our starting point to product sustainability is found in safety and durability, by developing products that are safe to wear for people and, in the long run, have less impact on the planet. Moving forward, we believe in circularity combined with product safety and durability.

Durable Development

Rains develops and manufactures modern and comfortable rainwear. Signature to this promise, is a lightweight yet strong polyester fabric backed with a flexible, fluorinate-free polyurethane coating. The fabric is bonded together through ultrasonic welding, ensuring quality, waterproof products. Additionally, all fittings, zippers and trimmings are designed and produced in materials optimized for wet conditions.

Windproof: 0.02 cmm Air permeability

Breathable: 4000g/mg Water vapor transmission

Insulated: 3M™️ Thinsulate Featherless Insulation

Quilted: 100% Polyester

Double-welded seams: High-frequency, ultrasonic technology

Seamless bondings: Backside woven puffer chambers

Weather-resistant hardware: Stainless steel and durable rubber trimmings

PU

The performative, fluorinate-free polyurethane coating ensures water repellency and a long lifetime. The rubber material has a high durability, and with its build-in insulative quality it also has windproof abilities. Rains has specifically chosen the PU-coating as it is significantly more environment-friendly than its hormone disrupting alternatives: PVC and DWR-PFC.

Polyester

A light woven polyester fiber is used as the backside of the water-repellent PU-coating. Together, the polyester and the PU represents a strong construction that both keeps the fit and keeps you dry. The environmental benefit of polyester is that the synthetic material is completely recyclable, and by 2021, our goal is to minimize our use of virgin polyester. To do this, we introduce a recycled polyester microfiber made of plastic bottles from a closed loop system.

Nylon

Nylon is a strong synthetic material and acts as the lining in our high-performance outerwear line, Thermal. Due to the fabrics yarn size and special weave, the nylon lining becomes lightweight and particularly more breathable. Like polyester, nylon is highly recyclable, and by 2021, our goal is to line all our Thermal outerwear with regenerated nylon made of recycled sources, turning waste into a valuable resource.

3M™️ Thinsulate Featherless Insulation

In line with our animal friendly product pledge, an innovative and high-tech featherless material is replacing natural down in our Thermal puffer jackets. The featherless and loose-fill insulation designed by scientists’ mimics down when dry and is warmer than down when wet. With our ban of natural down and feather, we are promoting animal welfare and a cruelty-free industry.

Metals

All metals used on Rains hardware are made of stainless steel. Stainless-steel is ultimately the most environmentally friendly metal as it is corrosion-resistant, highly durable, have high-recycled content and recapture rates, as well as the metal has the benefit of being nickel-free.

All individual product specifications can be found in the product descriptions and details section of the product pages.

Recycled Plastic Shopping Bags

It is of the utmost importance to us that we cut out waste wherever possible. One big opportunity for Rains was in the reassessment of our shopping bag production. With a goal to close the loop, we work with a manufacturer who gathers scraps from leftover industrial plastic production and recycles it into new products, such as our shopping bags. What would otherwise be discarded now finds a new life in the very shopping bag our products are carried in. Produced with durability in mind, we encourage extending the use of our recycled plastic shopping bags beyond the transportation of our products from stores to home.

Environmental Protection

With a holistic approach to sustainability, we aim to make responsible choices in every part of our business, including the way we design and operate our stores and offices, as well as how we move our products around.

Transportation and Logistics

Between the product’s point of origin and all the way to the customers mailbox, logistics represents a key element. Therefore, we aim to manage distribution from the manufacturer to the customer in the most environmental and efficient way – often combined. Thinking smart, yet sustainable means savings in routing costs related to both time and environmental factors. With more than one distribution center strategically placed to serve our operating continents, we can avoid air freight directly to customers on standard deliveries, which means significant savings in our carbon footprint. From the manufacturer’s ground, we make sure to always have full loads of containers, trucks and vans, as well as we pre-pack our orders to be shipped directly.

Going forward, we will remain having a focus on reducing our transport carbon footprint with the help of efficient capacity planning and by keeping the percentage of air freight down to a minimum.

Average transport split

Sea: 84,5%

Rail: 9,4%

Air: 6,1%

FSC® Packaging and Interior

In respect of the nature, all Rains’ retail packaging and wooden interior is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. This means our cardboard boxes and birch veneer furniture comes from certified, sustainably managed forests, where no more trees are felled than the forest can manage to reproduce, and where animals and plants are protected.

In the same sustainable manner, it is our goal to minimize our use of non-biodegradable packing drastically. By 2021, all Rains’ virgin oil polybags and shopping bags will be made of eco-friendly, compostable materials made of cornstarch.

Paperless Receipts

We are reducing our paper trail significantly as all Rains’ concept stores are equipped with a paperless receipt system. By providing dynamic in-store digital receipts, Rains can contribute to eliminate excessive use of paper, as well as provide a more efficient service to our customers. At all times, we recommend opting for the paperless receipt, but for those with no e-mail address or those who do not wish to share their personal e-mail address with Rains, a paper receipt can be printed.

LED Lighting

All Rains stores and offices are lit using LED lighting. LED lights use 75% less energy than traditional bulbs, and last more than 25 times longer. This means we are significantly reducing the amount of energy it takes to power all our concept stores, offices and showrooms worldwide.

Longevity

Longevity has shown to be one of the most influential parameters for improving environmental impacts. In other words: the longer a raincoat lasts, the smaller its annual environmental impact will be. In this case product care and maintenance is an essential aspect of sustainability.

Clever Care

Consumer care has a strong influence on a rainwear product’s overall environmental impact and life span. Therefore, Rains has an important role to play in educating our customers as to the right amount of care needed to guarantee our rainwear product’s performance, durability and longevity. By providing tips and tricks for clever care, we enable you to take better care of your rainwear, gear and the environment.

Tips and Tricks

Rains rainwear, bags and accessories are self-cleaning during use – as we like to say. An occasional rainy rinse is often times enough to freshen up your rainwear and gear, but sometimes we have to resort to other methods in order to remove any unfortunate and unwanted soils, stains or odors. The best way is to remove the impurities manually through surface and spot cleaning and air the rainwear to freshen up. Regular repeated surface washing can furthermore maintain breathability, make the color more vibrant and extend the useful life of the rainwear and gear.

Rains Garment Cleanser

Rains has developed an efficient, yet gentle foaming soap ideal for surface and spot cleaning of waterproof garments. The cleansing product has been developed by studying and testing the waterproof garments of Rains. The liquid is dispensed as a foam and removes soil, stains and other impurities. It is easy to use and is approved for use on all polyurethane based products from Rains.

Instructions

Step 1: Apply a small amount of the foaming soap in the desired area

Step 2: Gently scrub and cleanse the area with a dry cloth

Repeat regularly depending on usage to optimize the surface of the jacket.

Responsible Production
As a brand working with integrity, we are committed to maintain a responsible and sustainable focus throughout our value chain. We practice by setting high ethical standards and by paying attention to mindful manufacturing.
Mindful Manufacturing
Do one thing and do it good. This mantra has always been an integrated part of Rains’ way of operating our business, as well as it applies to our design thinking. With our permeating minimalist philosophy, it is far from natural for us to overdo, as in overdesigning or overproducing excessive quantities to do sale that eventually ends their life in landfills. When we design, we try to make sure every Rains product already has a home by keeping our product range relevant to the consumer.
Suppliers
We work with few, close manufacturing partners in order to build valuable partnerships that contributes to good quality, dialogue, sharing of knowledge and responsible development. Rains takes pride in the long-term relationships we have built, and we are proud to partner with professional, ethical factories that produce high-quality products in safe working conditions.
Audits, Training & Education
While we value a dialogue-based supplier relationship, we find ethical audits to be a useful tool in gaining insight in our production. The audits help us to understand how our manufacturing partners work and identify potential risk areas. Our audits are conducted by specialist third-party auditors carefully selected by amfori BSCI – the leading global business association for open and sustainable trade. Going beyond monitoring, we engage in training and education programmes to support our suppliers’ efforts in meeting Rains’ expectations.
Code of Conduct
As a member of amfori BSCI, we have adhered to the BSCI Code since our first operations. Moving forward, Rains has committed to implement UN’s universal and international agreed upon minimum standard for responsible business behavior. We do this to promote cooperation, dialogue and a strong risk culture throughout the supply chain. The core of the minimum standard is based on respecting human rights, protecting the environment and countering corruption in a systematically maintained risk management system within a protect, respect and remedy framework. The minimum standard builds upon UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.

Product Pledge

Ensuring safety of all products for both consumers and the environment is of a vital importance for Rains. Our pledge is based on strict European legal requirement and voluntary initiatives acted in accordance with in all our operating countries.

PFC and PVC-free

None of Rains’ products contain hormone disrupting, hazardous chemicals such as perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) or phthalates (PVC) that are listed as chemicals to avoid. PFC-coatings also called Durable Water Repellent (DWR) are made to bead up and disperse moisture from rainwear but are considered highly harmful for the environment. As an alternative, Rains’ water repellency comes from an innovative and specially developed PU-fabric that is water repellent in itself and therefore does not need to be coated with chemistry.

REACH

All components of Rains’ products stand confidently under the standards of REACH; the European legislation regulating registrations, evaluations, authorizations and restrictions of chemicals. Together with international testing centers, we are demonstrating our compliance, based on a rigorous environmental audit protocol that includes chemicals management.

Chemicals Management

When we test, we are testing for mg/kg levels of:

Phthalates Content, Dimethylformamide (DMFa), pH Value, Carcinogenic Dyes, Allergenic Disperse Dyes, Organotin Compounds, Pesticides, Phenol, PFOS (2006/122/EC), PFFOS & PFOA, PVD Identification, Beilstein (FTR), Material Identification, Azo Dyes, Formaldehyde, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), Flame Retardants, Chlorinated Organic Carriers (COC), Alkylphenols, Alkylphenol ethoxylates, Heavy metals extractable, Nickel release, Lead and Cadmium, Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compounds (PFC’s), Perfluorinated tensides (PFOS / PFOA), Tinorganic compounds.
